Sitooterie and Open Gardens
The 2009 Open Gardens featuring "Sitooteries"
The weekend event over two days proved a huge success for the village’s St Mary’s Church.
In spite of Saturday’s dull weather a steady stream of visitors arrived to tour the beautiful gardens, but when Sunday produced warm sunshine the visitors arrived in force from both sides of the Pennines and from farther a-field.
The gardens in the village are very varied and the visitors had a difficult choice to make in deciding which had given them most pleasure, many saying they could not decide. However the garden of Mr & Mrs Fletcher at Woodlands came out in first place and they will hold the trophy donated by the Dickens family for two years until the next Open Gardens Festival. Runners up were the gardens at Plum Tree Cottage & Thornton Cottage.
The Café did brisk business serving home–made cakes and very welcome cups of tea and when visitors felt like a break they were entertained by the Craven Accordion Orchestra.
At the church the Earby & District Local History Society had mounted a display relating to a rector of the church in the Victorian era. Also on show was the work of local artists and craftsmen, and children from the Primary School along with the vestments worn at the church made by Deacon Ann Turner.
All in all, something for everyone and an excellent result for St Mary’s Church as just over £2000 was raised for the upkeep of the medieval church.
