Thornton in Craven Social Committee

The committee members are a group of like minded residents with the aim of fostering community spirit through involvement in organising events throughout the year. The organisation does not exist to raise money per se, but to enable the organisation of village events which may not take place without someone to cover the funding.

Should anyone have any ideas for an event they wish to see take place please Contact us here

Anyone wishing to get involved with the Social Committee would be made more than welcome, new ideas are always needed. Contact us here The social committee has purchased the following, which are available to people within the village for use at suitable functions.
  • A Gas Barbecue has also been purchased, measuring 39” x 50” is ideal for a large fund raising event and is available to anyone in the village for the cost of gas usage.

  • A generator

  • A glass fronted "Beer Fridge"

  • Three Marquees, one measuring 20 feet x 40 feet, one at 20 feet square and one at 20 feet x 10 feet

  • A Hi Fi which will play CDs, mp3 format CDs and radio. It has an output of 420 watts so is suitable for a larger event

Currently four events are held each year

    THE VILLAGE FETE
Which in 2004 was held on Sunday 18th July on the Cricket Pitch, from 12.30. The whole atmosphere is fun day related, Earby Brass Band played throughout the afternoon, W I ladies provided afternoon teas, various competitions were held with excellent prizes, all of which are donated from local companies, the B B Q was in full flow for Burgers & Hot Dogs. The Pavilion provided the Bar area, children's games and amusements were in plenty. Further details can be found on the village fete pages.

    BONFIRE NIGHT
This is worth while attending, and has grown in popularity each year as the trend has moved away from home displays. Fireworks keep residents attention for nearly half an hour, whilst a supper along with mulled wine and juice for the children keeps them sustained. Bonfire night is normally held on the 5th November by kind permission of Thornton Hill nursing home, at the side of the rest home. Ticket prices are usually in the £3 - £3.50 for adults and £1.50 - £2 for children inclusive of supper.

    CASINO NIGHT
Held in early February, always popular so get your tickets early

    VILLAGE GET TOGETHERS.
We have also organised a couple of evening do's, the last being on the Saturday evening before the fete, down in the marquees on the cricket field. Due to the popularity of these events we are planning the next one for 4th December in the village hall. The social committee will provide food and a limited amount of drink. This is paid for out of funds raised from the fete. Entry is free.
These events are a great opportunity for the village to "Get Together" for a chat and a drink in an informal atmosphere, particularly as we have no licensed premises in the village any more.
